During the pandemic I created some home help videos to assist with common problems like anxiety, insomnia, lower back ache etc. Have a look – there could be something there to help you!

Baguazhang (also spelled Pa Kua Chang) is one of the most graceful and effective of the Chinese martial arts. With its fast circular walking and continuous, coiling, turning, twisting movements, Bauazhang has been likened to a spinning energy ball, a fan or a tornado…also to the waist of a dragon, ever turning and twisting.  Baguazhang practitioners can attack or defend while rapidly walking or turning.

Like the two other main styles of “Internal” Martial Arts – Tai Chi Chuan and Xing Yi Quan – Ba Gua Zhang is an integrated mind-body art that uses powerful wave-like whole body dynamics and continuous, circular techniques based on Yin-yang principles of flow and balance.

Benefits include surprisingly effective self-defence capabilities, aerobic training, improved breathing and coordination, increased flexibility and whole body speed and internal energy skills (Qigong). Since it is based on the same principles as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), its training can be as beneficial for internal health as for martial prowess.

This workshop will be of interest to anyone who practises Yang style Tai Chi Chuan and is of particular interest to those who practise Rose Li Tai Chi Chuan. The workshop is a unique opportunity for you (whatever your skill level) to polish your Taijiquan form and deepen your understanding of its underlying dynamics and energetics under the personal guidance of Shifu Donna Oliver. Donna has trained in Chinese internal martial arts and Qigong since 1988, predominantly with Shifu Andy James, at the Tai Chi and Meditation Centre in Toronto, where she continues to teach, study and oversee the organization’s direction. Students enjoyed a mixed schedule of classes, opportunities for trips to local venues and great company and good food. The course was set in the peace of the Umbrian countryside just south of Perugia.

My partner Karen who teaches Yoga (has a background training both in Shiatsu and Acupuncture) and I are teaching a course/holiday at my sister’s house in Italy in September. This one’s a combination of Yoga/Tai Chi Qigong. Have a look:

We did it before in 2012, it was great fun, and got feedback like this:
‘I enjoyed having a taster of all new disciplines – well organised and informatinve classes’
”Not feeling competitive’
‘Fun – felt everything was allowed’
‘Enjoyed learning new skills & relaxing in a peaceful location’.

There are likely to be participants with a variety of experience, from absolute beginner upwards…so we bring what we bring. As anyone working with energy exercises knows, what we learn at the beginning forms the foundation of everything. Learning is cyclical, or maybe a spiral..!

Thank you Dominic for making such a wonderful difference to my life with Tai Chi.

Since starting your classes a year ago, I could feel a change to my physical and mental well being within a couple of months. The gentle, relaxing exercises were perfect for me and being in a class with other people of varying ages and levels of Tai Chi I really enjoyed the atmosphere and looked forward to coming to your classes each week.

I loved being able to gain confidence in my ability and improve my health at the same time. It really helped with the lower body and leg strength but also it helped with my stress levels. A big plus was losing the weight I had put on after having suffered from a prolapsed disc which left me feeling I would never regain my full strength or be pain free. Tai Chi has changed so much for me. I now feel more grounded and confident and, thankfully no longer suffer from the pain I had for over a year.

I look forward to returning in 2017 for the start of a new year and the Master Class in March with Sufi Andy James. A big step up from being a beginner only a year ago.

Thank you Dominic,

Ann Hawick
